Every sponge is comprised of some very basic body parts:
- Ostia - tiny holes in the sponge that take-in a current of water and food through its body canals.
- Oscula - the large hole(s) at the top of sponges that expels water from its inner canals.
- Spicules - tiny, needle-like structures that provide both structure and defense.
- Choanocytes - cells that thrash flagella to move a current through the sponge's body.
- Archaeocytes - mobile cells that move nutrients and build structure around the sponge's body.
